The earliest recorded foxhound pack in Surrey was formed in 1735 near Croydon. However, the first time the Old Surrey Hunt group came in to being was in 1808 when they were located in Godstone, but it was to be a further 44 years before they organised their own race meeting on Thursday 22nd January 1852. The meeting was held on a challenging 3 ½ mile course in Sutton, when the Sutton Free Handicap was won by The Screw for Mr Gardener who beat Bullfincher. The more valuable County Stakes went to The Rector by 2 lengths from the favourite Physician. Although this was the only time the Group held a meeting under rules, it later became known as the Old Surrey and Burstow Hunt Steeplechases and was a popular point to point meeting held at Marsh Green, Edenbridge well into the 20th century.
